Tai Chi

Tai Chi Chuan (also known simply as Tai Chi) is an ancient Chinese martial art. The words "Tai Chi Chuan" literally mean "Supreme Ultimate Fist"—or more loosely translated: "greatest utmost fighting technique." At advanced levels, Tai Chi Chuan can be used for combat and self-defense.

However, most people practice Tai Chi for its many health benefits. Tai Chi consists of a sequence of slow, graceful movements accompanied by deep breathing. It is, in essence, a form of moving meditation, which relaxes the mind and body, and helps bring you into harmony with yourself and the universe around you. Regular Tai Chi practice also helps to cultivate and balance Qi (life energy), which boosts the immune system, reduces stress, and increases energy levels.

The slow, even pace of Tai Chi promotes longevity by lowering your heart rate, which in turn slows down the aging process. The continuous turning of the waist from left to right, right to left, results in a gentle internal massage that strengthens vital organs so that they can function more effectively. The constant shifting of weight from one foot to the other, and the repeated contracting and relaxing of muscles serve to regulate blood pressure. The gentle, circular movements loosen joints throughout your entire body, which alleviates arthritis and other joint pain. The natural, upright body alignment takes pressure off spinal joints and back muscles, which relieves chronic back pain and strengthens the central nervous system. Finally, studies have shown that Tai Chi improves balance and reduces anxiety and depression.

About our Class

Simo Tzyann Hsu starts beginning students with the Yang Style 24 Tai Chi Form. This is a standardized short form developed in China. It contains less repetition than traditional long forms, making it easier to learn and remember, while still offering a complete Tai Chi workout.

Beginners also learn Qigong exercises, which rejuvenate the body by clearing out blockages in the body’s meridians (energy channels). Once these blockages are clear, Qi (life energy) flows more freely, promoting healthy circulation and bringing warmth to your organs, muscles, joints, and bones. With regular practice, Qigong exercises result in a more youthful body and improve your overall health.

There are also classes reserved for intermediate and advanced students, as well as a half hour meditation class. In addition, there is a class on Saturdays that is open to students of all levels.
